Formats describe the commonly published structure for business identifiers. Examples are illustrative patterns only—not assigned, checksum-validated, or active numbers. Branches, legacy records, legal forms, and subnational registries can use additional variants. “No single countrywide format published” means a reliable national structure was not available; it does not mean the jurisdiction has no tax or registration system.

DIRECTORY SCOPE

Format guidance and lookup capability are different facts.

Selectable jurisdiction
The country or territory appears in VATFind's search selector. This does not promise that every company or identifier will be returned.
Documented structure
The directory explains the commonly published identifier shape and gives an illustrative example. A format match does not prove issuance.
API capability
The country-capability endpoint reports supported, unsupported and best-effort dimensions for an integration. Read the status model.

RESEARCH METHOD

Structural guidance—not a live authority decision.

Confirm the current rule before relying on a format

The directory uses national registry material and cross-jurisdiction reference sets from the European Commission, OECD and GLEIF. It is a research aid rather than a row-by-row live authority response: formats, aliases, legacy variants and tax systems can change, so use the relevant issuing authority when a current decision depends on a number.

READ THE FORMATS CORRECTLY

A format is not a validity decision.

A number can match the expected structure and still be inactive, unassigned, or attached to another entity. Some countries use VAT, others use GST, sales tax, or a general business-tax identifier. VATFind reports the identifier available in the company record and keeps it separate from the legal registration number.

COUNTRY COVERAGE QUESTIONS

Understand VAT formats, registration numbers, and coverage.

Use the directory as structural guidance and the capability model for integration support.

Which countries and jurisdictions does VATFind cover?

The country directory lists every jurisdiction selectable in VATFind search and shows commonly published VAT, business-tax, and company-registration formats. Selectable does not mean every company, field, or identifier is available.

Does appearing in the VAT country directory guarantee a lookup result?

No. A listed jurisdiction means it can be selected and its identifier guidance is documented. Actual company-record coverage, source availability, fields, and match outcomes vary by country and record.

What is the difference between a VAT number and a company registration number?

A VAT or business-tax number identifies a tax registration or tax account, while a company registration number identifies the legal entity in a business registry. Some workflows use both, and VATFind keeps them as separate fields.

Does a valid VAT number format prove the number is active?

No. A format match only shows that the submitted value resembles the documented structure. It does not prove issuance, ownership, current registration, tax compliance, or authority status.

Are the VAT number examples in the directory real companies?

No. The examples illustrate identifier structure and should not be treated as a live company or authority result. Formatting can include prefixes, letters, digits, checksums, or local variants.

Why do some countries use GST, sales tax, or another identifier instead of VAT?

Tax systems and terminology differ by jurisdiction. The directory records the commonly used local business-tax identifier while keeping it separate from the legal company-registration number.
