Start with the legal company name and country. Match the entity before using any tax number you find.
1. Start with the right company name
A trading name and a legal company name may be different. Before searching, look at the business name on your contract, invoice, or supplier onboarding form. Keep any registration number and registered address alongside it.
In VATFind, choose Company name and the country where that legal entity is registered. Enter the name without adding a tax number to the same field. For the United States and Canada, a state or province can help narrow the search.
2. Compare the matches
A similar name is not enough to identify a business. Compare the country, registration number, and available address. A group of companies can have several subsidiaries, and the entity you pay may not be the entity whose brand appears on a website.
If VATFind returns several records, select the one that matches your documents. The result opens the available details for that record. Do not choose the first name simply because it looks familiar.
3. Find the available tax ID
The company record displays a VAT or tax ID when the source supplies one. A blank field means that the number was not supplied in that result; it does not establish that the company is unregistered.
For UK businesses, GOV.UK also points to invoices, receipts, and company websites as places to find VAT numbers. If you still cannot identify it, ask the supplier directly.
GOV.UK: Check a UK VAT number4. Treat validation as a separate step
Finding a number in a company record is different from confirming its tax registration status. VATFind currently performs the first task. Its company registry status must not be read as a VAT-validity result.
When a decision depends on current tax registration, use the relevant official authority service and keep its result with your records. If the details do not match, resolve the discrepancy with the company before relying on the number.
What if the search returns no match?
Check the country, spelling, legal suffix, and any state or province. Try the name exactly as it appears on a recent business document. An empty company-data result is not a declaration that the business or VAT number is invalid.
Each completed search, including a search without a match, uses one daily allowance. An upstream service error does not use a free search.
