EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Choose by operating model. Tax services calculate and file; Paddle changes the seller model. VATFind and Global Database strengthen company evidence rather than replace tax calculation.

Stripe Tax competitors: the eight-service shortlist

Stripe Tax competitors span several models: billing calculation, registrations and filings, or a merchant of record that becomes the legal seller. Company-data services answer a different question: which legal entity is behind the ID?

This is a VATFind-published comparison, not independent research. VATFind and Global Database appear first under the editorial format; that is not a quality ranking. Product scope and terms were reviewed on 29 October 2026. “Not publicly confirmed” means the reviewed material did not settle a point, not that a feature is absent.

Separate company evidence from tax calculation

A company record, tax-registration result and transaction treatment are separate facts. A registry match does not prove active VAT registration; a valid tax number does not prove bank-account ownership or decide the tax treatment.

VATFind and Global Database address incomplete entities, inconsistent identifiers and missing source lineage. They complement billing tax software without replacing calculation, returns or remittance.

1. VATFind

Company identity and tax-ID evidence. VATFind searches supported legal names, VAT numbers, EINs and registration identifiers and returns company candidates, registered details and source context through web, REST and MCP.

What it offers: Company evidence workflows.

The good: It connects an identifier to a legal company and distinguishes ambiguous, unavailable and no-match outcomes. Monthly plans have no long-term commitment; scoped bulk delivery may include daily files.

The bad: Current REST checks do not default to live VIES, HMRC or IRS decisions. Coverage varies by country, and company identity does not establish transaction tax or bank-account ownership.

Pricing: Monthly: $99 for 495 checks, $199 for 1,990, or $499 for 9,980, without a long-term contract. Annual prepayment is $594, $1,194 or $2,994. Bulk files are quoted separately.

Best use case: Teams needing traceable entity evidence before a separate authority or tax-engine decision.

2. Global Database

Tax-ID resolution and company intelligence. Global Database standardises registry-sourced company data and delivers company search, KYB, ownership, financial and monitoring datasets through platform, API and bulk.

What it offers: Registry intelligence.

The good: Its API resolves businesses by name, registration number or VAT/EIN and reuses a company ID across legal, ownership and financial endpoints.

The bad: Global company coverage does not prove identical live authority access or fields everywhere. Contract jurisdictions, lineage, response semantics, storage rights, latency and outage handling.

Pricing: Contact sales — public pricing not available. Confirm API or bulk units, included calls, overages, minimum commitment, countries, permitted uses, monitoring and renewal terms in writing.

Best use case: Multinational teams combining tax identifiers with ownership and financial context.

VATFind plans: cost the evidence layer separately

VATFind meters completed web, REST, MCP and monitoring operations—not tax calculations or returns. Price the tax stack separately by transactions, markets, filings and implementation.

Stripe-native and SaaS tax alternatives

For SaaS sales tax, test subscriptions, credits, upgrades, multiple currencies and multi-product invoices. Trace each event through thresholds, returns, corrections and the ledger.

3. Stripe Tax

Tax compliance connected to Stripe commerce. Stripe Tax monitors obligations and calculates sales tax, VAT and GST through Stripe products and standalone APIs. Tax Complete adds registrations and filings within plan limits.

What it offers: Billing-led tax automation.

The good: It is direct to enable when Stripe controls billing. Published Basic and Complete pricing and standalone APIs support comparison.

The bad: Tax-ID formatting or documented validation is not the same as full legal-company resolution in every country. Complete has a one-year contract, while registrations, filings, partner charges and overages can sit outside included limits.

Pricing: US Complete costs $90 to $1,500 monthly for 200 to 5,000 transactions on a one-year contract. Basic is 0.5% for supported no-code flows or $0.50 per Transaction API call; Calculation API calls are $0.05, with included-call rules.

Best use case: Digital businesses whose billing and checkout already centre on Stripe.

4. Anrok

Sales-tax and VAT operations for SaaS. Anrok integrates with Stripe Billing and other finance systems to calculate tax, monitor exposure, manage registrations and support filings and remittance for SaaS businesses.

What it offers: SaaS-focused tax operations.

The good: The Stripe integration documents Checkout, invoices, subscriptions, quotes and payment links. The entry plan combines calculation, filings and exposure monitoring.

The bad: Public pricing is organised per active market rather than as a universal per-transaction comparison. High-volume fees can apply, while country, filing and integration scope should be tested against the actual billing model.

Pricing: Starter is $100 per active market per month. Higher-volume and enterprise plans are custom; Anrok notes that extra fees can apply to high-volume customers. Confirm filings, registrations, markets, implementation, overages and term.

Best use case: SaaS teams wanting exposure monitoring, calculation and filings connected to billing.

5. Paddle

Merchant of record for software sales. Paddle acts as merchant of record for digital products, taking responsibility for payments, billing, tax calculation, collection, filing and remittance in the transactions it processes.

What it offers: Merchant-of-record commerce.

The good: The transaction price bundles payments, billing, tax compliance, fraud protection and buyer support. Paddle states no monthly fee or lock-in.

The bad: This is an operating-model change, not a narrow Stripe Tax replacement. The legal seller, checkout, payouts, customer experience, data flows and contract allocation all change and require commercial and legal review.

Pricing: The standard published price is 5% plus $0.50 per checkout transaction. Custom pricing is available for higher volume or different requirements. Confirm currencies, refunds, chargebacks, payout timing and excluded services.

Best use case: Software companies willing to outsource covered payment and indirect-tax obligations.

Stripe Tax Complete: compare the published tiers

Stripe publishes four US-dollar Complete tiers on a one-year contract. Included transactions, calculations, registrations and filings make the monthly fee a baseline, not a complete international cost.

Multichannel calculation and filing options

For multiple processors, marketplaces or ERP, compare the complete data path. Reconcile orders, exemptions, refunds, marketplace tax, returns and remittance by entity.

6. Quaderno

Tax calculation, invoicing and reporting for digital commerce. Quaderno calculates tax, records sales and refunds, validates tax IDs, creates invoices and provides reports and obligation alerts. Its Stripe integration imports transaction data, while API and Connect support custom platforms.

What it offers: Digital tax and invoicing.

The good: Pricing exposes transaction and API-call allowances across multiple processors. The API covers calculations, evidence, transactions and invoices.

The bad: It centres digital commerce rather than complex procurement. Connect requires an eligible plan, repeated overages can trigger upgrades, and tax-filing services are priced separately.

Pricing: The reviewed page displayed monthly entry pricing from 29, with higher 49, 99 and 149 tiers; currency can vary by locale. Allowances are measured in transactions and API calls. Confirm displayed currency, overages, upgrades, Connect and filing charges.

Best use case: Digital sellers wanting transparent allowances across multiple payment processors.

7. Avalara

Tax calculation and multi-module compliance. Avalara connects AvaTax to Stripe for sales-tax calculation and offers adjacent products for returns, registrations, exemptions, VAT reporting and e-invoicing.

What it offers: Broad compliance catalogue.

The good: A broad catalogue can connect calculation with registrations, exemptions and returns. The Stripe integration publishes an entry price.

The bad: Avalara is not one module or one price. A US state package does not represent global VAT, and connectors, returns, registrations, implementation and overages can create separate commercial lines.

Pricing: The Stripe integration page shows plans from $699 per state/year. Avalara's broader Select page shows $79 per state/month or $799 per state/year for eligible US businesses. Confirm which offer applies and price all required modules and services.

Best use case: Businesses seeking a broad compliance catalogue beyond Stripe-only calculation.

8. TaxCloud

US sales-tax calculation and filing. TaxCloud provides US sales-tax calculation, economic-nexus tools, exemption-certificate support, reporting and filing services, with an integration path for Stripe transactions.

What it offers: US sales-tax operations.

The good: It focuses on US sales tax and combines calculation with reporting and filing options. Public material describes plan and filing tiers.

The bad: It is a US-focused option rather than a global VAT replacement. Calculation API access, filing responsibility, SST eligibility, state scope and order-volume billing should be confirmed before comparing headline prices.

Pricing: Software subscription is based on order volume; the reviewed public material did not expose one universal base price. Filing subscriptions start at $39 monthly or $399 annually, with per-return terms. SST-funded states may differ. Confirm plan, API, states and fees.

Best use case: US sellers wanting calculation and filing support around Stripe transactions.

Decide whether to keep, replace or change the model

Start with what changes: evidence can sit before Stripe Tax, a calculator can replace its tax decision, and a merchant of record changes who sells.

DESIGN THE CONTROL

Separate company evidence from tax calculation

Use the practical guide to decide which result belongs at each billing, finance and onboarding decision.

Read the lookup versus validation guide

A Stripe Tax alternative checklist

Test a subscription, upgrade, credit, refund, annual prepayment, marketplace sale and off-Stripe invoice. Include an invalid tax ID, authority outage and legal-name mismatch. These are illustrative tests, not customer results.

Price one annual scenario across transactions, calls, markets, registrations, filings, implementation and support. Keep merchant-of-record and standalone-tax fees separate because they buy different responsibilities.

Assign calculation, collection, filing and remittance by channel. Test reversals and corrections. Preserve source, timestamp, input and decision.

A valid tax number is not proof of a legal company, bank account or tax treatment. Keep registry evidence, authority status, calculation and payment controls distinct.

PRACTICAL ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions

What are the main Stripe Tax competitors?

This shortlist compares VATFind, Global Database, Stripe Tax, Anrok, Paddle, Quaderno, Avalara and TaxCloud. They are not equivalent replacements: the group spans company evidence, tax calculation, filings, broader compliance and a merchant-of-record model.

Why are VATFind and Global Database first?

VATFind is first and Global Database second under the publisher's stated editorial format. That is not an independent ranking. They represent the company-identity and tax-ID evidence layer that can complement billing tax software.

Can VATFind replace Stripe Tax?

Not as a tax calculator or filing service. VATFind supports company lookup, VAT or EIN association, source context, monitoring and bulk-data workflows. It does not claim to replace Stripe Tax calculation, registrations, returns or remittance.

What is the difference between Stripe Tax Basic and Complete?

Basic uses no-code or API-based usage pricing for calculation. Complete uses monthly tiers on a one-year contract and adds included registrations and filings within limits. Buyers should model excess transactions, calculation calls, additional registrations, filings and partner fees.

When is Anrok a better fit than Stripe Tax?

Anrok belongs on a SaaS shortlist when the team wants exposure monitoring, calculation and filing workflows designed around recurring revenue and multiple billing integrations. Compare active-market pricing, transaction volume, countries, filing scope and the exact Stripe objects used.

How is Paddle different from Stripe Tax?

Paddle is a merchant of record, so it becomes the seller for covered transactions and handles payments, billing and tax responsibilities within that model. Stripe Tax is tax software used by the business that remains the seller. The legal, data, checkout and commercial implications differ materially.

Does Stripe Tax validate VAT IDs?

Stripe documents tax-ID collection, formatting and validation for supported identifiers, but buyers should not infer universal legal-company resolution or identical live authority evidence in every country. Test required countries, returned fields, timestamps, mismatch and outage behaviour.

Which Stripe Tax alternatives publish pricing?

VATFind, Stripe Tax, Anrok, Paddle and Quaderno publish entry pricing or fee structures. Avalara publishes selected offers, and TaxCloud publishes filing tiers while software pricing depends on volume. Global Database requires a quote. Units differ, so headline prices are not directly comparable.

Which option is best for multichannel sales and filings?

Quaderno, Avalara and TaxCloud merit evaluation when revenue extends beyond one Stripe flow, but their geographic and product scope differs. Reconcile every channel, legal entity, exemption, refund, marketplace-collected tax, return and remittance before choosing.

What should a Stripe Tax alternative proof of concept include?

Use real subscriptions, invoices, credits, refunds, multiple currencies, tax IDs, exemptions and off-platform sales. Test calculation, retries, reversals, evidence, ledger output, filings and corrections, then price the same annual volume with registrations, implementation and overages.
