EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Choose the evidence before choosing the tool. VATFind helps resolve the legal company behind an identifier; an official VAT-status check answers a separate question. Global Database adds wider enterprise company intelligence, VATify.eu combines European registers and monitoring, Valdit packages VIES workflows, vatlayer offers an EU-focused API, and VIES supplies the official EU cross-border baseline. Some are alternatives; others belong together.

VATFind competitors: the six-service shortlist

A search for VATFind competitors often hides two requirements: find the legal entity associated with a tax identifier, or obtain current authority-backed VAT status. They are not interchangeable. A company can appear in a record without that record confirming its current VAT registration. Conversely, an authority response may not supply enough corporate context to reconcile a supplier master.

This VATFind-published comparison is written by Nic Buldumac, founder of Global Database. The first two positions are editorial presentation, not an independent performance ranking. Product scope and prices were checked on 20 October 2026. ‘Not publicly confirmed’ means the reviewed materials did not settle a question; it does not mean a feature is absent.

Company-record lookup and enterprise data

These first two services fit teams investigating the company behind a VAT number, cleaning legal names or enriching supplier records. Require a sample from the countries you actually buy from. A broad jurisdiction directory is not a guarantee that every company has a tax identifier, complete ownership data or a fresh authority response.

1. VATFind

Company-record lookup and identity evidence. VATFind accepts company names and supported identifiers, then returns available legal-company records and interpretable result states through the web, REST API and MCP.

What it offers: Company resolution · Source context · REST and MCP · Company monitoring.

The good: Useful for investigating which legal entity sits behind an invoice or onboarding record. Available source details and retrieval time support review; scheduled company checks and bulk delivery extend the workflow.

The trade-offs: Its current REST contract does not call live VIES, HMRC or IRS services. Source retrieval time is not the last update of every field. Company monitoring does not establish current VAT-registration status, and country coverage is not uniform.

Pricing: Monthly: $99/495 checks, $199/1,990 or $499/9,980. Optional annual prepayment: $594, $1,194 or $2,994 respectively. Monthly plans renew monthly until cancelled; annual plans renew yearly. Completed no-match checks consume allowance; source failures restore it. Higher volume and bulk require a quote, not an assumed overage rate.

Best use case: Finance, procurement and API teams needing company identity and traceable record evidence alongside a separate authority check when required.

2. Global Database

Enterprise registry intelligence and delivery. Global Database combines company identifiers with registry profiles, ownership, financials and corporate relationships, with API and bulk delivery options.

What it offers: Company intelligence · Tax-ID workflows · API and bulk · Portfolio monitoring.

The good: Its published source catalogue names government registries and tax authorities. This helps enterprise teams evaluate lineage and join supplier identity to wider corporate information rather than buying another isolated checker.

The trade-offs: The source catalogue itself shows different refresh cadences. Confirm live authority access, country fields, monitoring and evidence retention in the contracted product; worldwide company coverage does not prove worldwide live tax validation.

Pricing: Contact sales — public pricing not available for the enterprise tax-ID/API/bulk scope compared here. Minimum commitment, usage, overages, update frequency, term, retention and redistribution rights require a written quotation.

Best use case: Enterprises consolidating company evidence across tax, risk, supplier onboarding and master-data systems.

VATFind pricing: include monitoring in the workload

The included allowance covers completed paid web, REST, MCP and company-monitoring operations, not just manual searches. Model recurring work before committing. Illustrative example: 20 daily monitors use approximately 600 checks in a 30-day month, plus 20 initial baseline checks. That exceeds Starter's 495-check allowance before other lookups. This is usage arithmetic, not a customer result.

European monitoring and VIES workflow alternatives

VATify.eu and Valdit add operational handling around country data or VIES enquiries. They can suit a European supplier population without requiring the broader corporate dataset above. Ask what happens when a source cannot answer, who receives the exception and whether the eventual authority result remains distinguishable from cached or provisional information.

3. VATify.eu

European company verification and monitoring. VATify.eu describes access to more than 40 country registers, daily partner checks, change notifications, spreadsheet reports and a JSON API.

What it offers: Country-register queries · Change notifications · API · Spreadsheet reports.

The good: It documents sources beyond VIES and provides country-specific coverage descriptions. Daily change emails and weekly status files can fit a supplier-review operation without building every notification yourself.

The trade-offs: Fields depend on the country source. Some public coverage explanations are dated, including Brexit-era wording; confirm current endpoints, timestamps and refresh behaviour. API subscriptions and company-monitoring packages are separate commercial products.

Pricing: API: €14/month plus €0.10/call; €29 includes 3,000 calls, €49 includes 10,000, and €99 includes 25,000. Excess calls are €0.10 each; prices exclude VAT. Enterprise terms and minimum duration are not publicly confirmed on the reviewed API price page.

Best use case: European finance and integration teams wanting country-source checks plus a defined monitoring/reporting process.

4. Valdit

VIES validation, records and Excel workflows. Valdit queries VIES through a web checker, Excel add-in and validation API; its documentation covers stored enquiries, scheduled revalidation and outage handling.

What it offers: VIES enquiries · Excel checks · Records management · Validation API.

The good: The Excel workflow returns enquiry time and consultation reference alongside available name/address data. API documentation separates new validations, later rechecks and reading stored results.

The trade-offs: The API's provisional VatQ score during an outage is not an official VAT confirmation. Validate current country support and application compatibility; dated web copy is not a contractual coverage guarantee.

Pricing: Excel: €2.95/month equivalent for 200 checks, €6.95 for 800 or €24.95 for 4,000, excluding VAT and billed annually. These are not API prices. API: Contact sales — public pricing not available; documented credit options are 800/2,000/4,000 monthly validations, then bespoke terms.

Best use case: Accounts-receivable teams retaining VIES enquiry evidence in spreadsheets or applications.

Compare API allowances within the same product

A VAT validation API and a VAT checker API are buyer labels, not proof of identical outputs. Compare usable responses, source states and billable operations. The next chart shows only VATify.eu's included-call plans; its €14 access-plus-usage option has no comparable included bundle and is excluded. Neither chart converts euros to dollars or claims a cheaper equivalent service.

A focused API and the official EU baseline

For an EU-only requirement, a small integration or direct official enquiry may be sufficient. Avoid paying for a worldwide company dataset when your acceptance criterion is a narrow authority response—but do not expect that response to resolve every supplier-identity question.

5. vatlayer

EU-focused VAT validation and rates API. APILayer's vatlayer offers JSON-based VAT-number validation, VAT rates and price-calculation endpoints.

What it offers: VAT validation · Rates · Price calculations.

The good: A narrow interface and published request bundles make a bounded EU integration straightforward to evaluate.

The trade-offs: Pages still refer to 28 EU members, so verify actual supported countries and response fields rather than repeating that count. Monitoring and wider company ownership are not publicly confirmed in the reviewed scope.

Pricing: Monthly USD: Basic $9.99/1,000 requests, Professional $29.99/4,000, Enterprise $99.99/20,000. Listed per-call overages: $0.03996/$0.02999/$0.019998 respectively. Annual options and optional annually billed support are separate; confirm the final checkout and cancellation terms.

Best use case: Developers requiring a focused EU VAT integration rather than enterprise company intelligence.

6. VIES

European Commission official search service. VIES retrieves national VAT information to check registration for intra-EU transactions. It is an official system, not a commercial company.

What it offers: Official EU VAT enquiry · Point-in-time response.

The good: Provides the official baseline without a commercial subscription. Retaining the enquiry supports the buyer's evidence process.

The trade-offs: An unavailable source is not an invalid number. An invalid response can reflect incomplete or missing cross-border activation, not a fictitious company. Wider identity enrichment, recurring monitoring and operational exception handling require separate work.

Pricing: Free public enquiry service; no commercial subscription or usage bundle. Internal integration, retries, evidence storage and review still have operating costs.

Best use case: A limited EU authority-status requirement with an established internal evidence and exception process.

Test the evidence returned, not the green tick

VAT ID validation should preserve distinct facts: format, company association, authority status and legal-company status. An active company cannot substitute for active VAT registration; neither proves bank-account ownership. A VATFind alternative is useful only if it meets the specific evidence requirement you are replacing.

UNDERSTAND THE RESULT

Separate company lookup from VAT validation

Use the practical guide to define the evidence your workflow actually needs.

Read the lookup versus validation guide

A buying checklist that can reject the wrong service

Use a labelled test set containing clean matches, a trading-name mismatch, multiple possible entities, a completed no-match and an unavailable source. These are illustrative test cases, not customer validation results. Require the input, country, source, retrieval time, returned fields and handling decision for each case.

Define three acceptance gates. First, identity: can your team reproduce the selected legal entity using country and registration evidence, without silently accepting the first name match? Second, status: can it tell an unsupported authority check from an authority rejection? Third, operations: can it recover an interrupted request without creating a second charge or losing the review trail? Reject an otherwise attractive service if a mandatory gate fails in a material country.

Keep a country-by-field requirement sheet rather than one global coverage percentage. Record the supplier identifier you already hold, the legal-name or address evidence you need, the permitted age of that evidence and the team responsible for discrepancies. This makes a missing field a visible procurement decision instead of an integration surprise. It also prevents a live enquiry from being confused with a recently downloaded copy of an older source record.

Ask vendors: which response is live, which is cached, what does the timestamp describe, what consumes allowance, and what survives cancellation? For bulk files, specify schema, population, inserts/deletes, delivery cadence and missed-feed recovery. A daily file delivery does not establish daily government updates for every record.

A selection fails when procurement compares headline countries and entry fees while ignoring exceptions, permissions and downstream review effort. Agree measurable acceptance criteria for your own population; do not accept a demonstration as proof of universal coverage. Preserve the VAT decision and any bank-account verification as separate controls.

PRACTICAL ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions

Which VATFind competitors should enterprise buyers consider?

This shortlist includes VATFind, Global Database, VATify.eu, Valdit, vatlayer and VIES. Choose by the evidence required: company identity, current authority status, retained enquiries, API integration or monitored records—not presentation order.

Does VATFind confirm live VAT-registration status?

Not through the current REST contract reviewed here. It returns company-record association and separate evidence fields; a matching company record is not a live VIES or HMRC confirmation.

When is Global Database the better fit?

When an enterprise needs wider registry intelligence, corporate relationships and contracted API or bulk delivery across several workflows. Confirm the exact tax-authority path, coverage and service commitments in the order.

Can free VIES replace a paid company lookup?

It can satisfy a defined EU cross-border VAT-status enquiry, but not every legal-entity, enrichment or monitoring requirement. A paid workflow may add integration and evidence handling; it does not create authority evidence when the source cannot answer.

Are the published starting prices comparable?

No. They buy different units and products. VATFind charges for completed checks; VATify.eu has API and monitoring packages; Valdit's Excel prices are annual-billing equivalents; vatlayer charges per API request bundle. VIES is a free official service.

Can I buy monthly without an annual commitment?

VATFind publishes monthly-renewing plans with optional annual prepayment. Confirm cancellation and access terms before buying. Do not interpret Valdit's displayed monthly Excel equivalent as a monthly contract, or assume all enterprise quotations use self-service terms.

Does a VAT validation API prove bank-account ownership?

No. Tax-number status and company identity do not establish who owns a bank account. Keep bank-account verification and payment approval separate from VAT or company lookup.

What should happen when a source is unavailable?

Retain the unresolved status, apply your exception policy and retry appropriately. Do not translate an outage into an invalid registration or replace an official result with an unlabelled probability score.

What must a bulk-data contract specify?

Define countries, entity population, fields, keys, lineage, timestamps, usage rights, update cadence and recovery after a missed delivery. Scheduled delivery and underlying source freshness are different commitments.

How should we test monitoring before signing?

Ask which fields are checked, how often, what each run costs, how events are delivered and who owns exceptions. Verify whether monitoring means company-record change or a fresh tax-authority enquiry; they are not the same service.
